(-)When I think about my membership of the ABA,
I think about the ability to not only reach into
and touch base with individuals who are members of the ABA,
but also, externally, the ability to go on the Hill,
participate in the Washington Summit,
the ability to be able to talk
to other peers on a consistent basis,
knowing that everyone is rowing the boat
on behalf of the industry.
So when I think about our specific bank,
along with banks that may be rural in the South,
or if you want to call it urban,
out West or in the Northeast,
the American Bankers Association
has certainly been an advocate
for banks of all walks of life.
And so it has given us another platform
to really reach into and to create partnerships.
If I look at my institution,
we have expenses for several trade associations,
and it's expensive in some regards,
but I will tell you,
the value back is certainly worth the effort
in terms of the expenditure that you're looking at.
So the question is,
would you like to find yourself outside of the boat,
watching others row the boat on behalf of our industry,
or would you like to join us
and be one of those who is rowing the boat?

(-)ABA has a lot of resources in the innovation space.
They bring vendors front and center
at their different conferences,
and there's a lot of opportunity
to see what is out there and what is available.
I was lucky enough to be selected
to be the chair of the American Bankers Core Committee
and where we had the opportunity to evaluate all the cores
that were operating in the United States at the time.
One of the benefits of volunteering on ABA boards
is the fact that you're exposed to so much.
From a technology standpoint, I've seen all the cores
that are operating in the country today,
and I have a good sense
of what is available to my institution.
ABA has in its membership banks of all shapes
and sizes and organization types, and the value of that
means there's not a myopic view of the industry.
You get to see what everybody is doing
and what they're doing differently,
and you can learn from each and every banker,
whether they're a single branch bank
or whether they're a multi-billion dollar bank.

(-)The value proposition of the American Bankers Association
is compelling.
If you look at the resources of the organization,
the advocacy work that it does for the industry,
I think that for banks who are not members,
they're simply missing out.
(-)The value back is certainly worth the effort
in terms of the expenditure that you're looking at.
(-)ABA represents the smallest of banks
to the largest of banks.
We all have very similar issues,
and they are that voice for all of us as bankers.
(-)They serve and work very closely
with all of the 51 state associations.
(-)You get to see what everybody is doing,
and what they're doing differently,
and you can learn from each and every banker.
(-)When things come to a need for compliance,
a need for regulation review,
we can rely on the experts at ABA.
(-)The Experts on Call program
actually think is one of the best value propositions
of the ABA.
Whether it's a technical compliance matter,
a regulatory matter, or some operational procedure,
it's all paid for as a part of the membership.
(-)One of the benefits of volunteering on ABA boards
is the fact that you're exposed to so much.
From a technology standpoint,
I've seen all the cores that are operating
in the country today,
and I have a good sense
of what is available to my institution.
(-)The ABA Frontline Compliance training is free
as part of your membership.
From the compliance officers to the tellers,
to the loan officers, to people on our finance team,
it's just an incredible resource
that is free with your membership.
(-)The other thing that's been so valuable
to me and to my bank
are the multiple committees that they have,
and they bring together bankers from all over the country
and from all different sized banks,
and that allows us to speak as one.
(-)To become a leader in the banking,
you can't just be doing your job well.
You need to actually understand
how all the pieces work together.
(-)The question is,
would you like to find yourself outside of the boat,
watching others row the boat on behalf of our industry,
or would you like to join us
and be one of those who is rowing the boat?
