Establishes criminal penalties for mail theft and related conduct, including possession or sale of stolen mail, to combat check fraud and identity theft.

Status: Passed State: Louisiana Tags: Check Fraud, Mail Theft

About the Legislation:

HB 202 (Act 67) by Rep. Kim Carver is LBA-sponsored legislation that creates a new state crime of mail theft to help combat check fraud and identity theft. This new statute will also make it a crime to possess or sell stolen mail, as well as to steal or possess without authorization a mailbox key. Mail theft has become a major problem across the country and stolen mail is a major source of check fraud and other financial crime. A growing number of states have enacted state mail theft statutes to complement the federal mail theft statute. We give special thanks to Rep. Carver, who is an employee of Gulf Coast Bank & Trust, for authoring this important legislation.
